GEORGIA — Retail giants Macy's and Kohl's, while facing economic changes, have announced closures of multiple underperforming stores in Georgia.
Kohl's, a Wisconsin-based department retailer with 33 Georgia stores, said it is closing its Duluth location at 2050 W. Liddell Road.
The closure is part of plans to shutter 27 underperforming stores by April, and shut down a California-based E-commerce fulfillment center in May, the company said in a news release on Thursday.
Impacted workers have been notified and will receive either a severance package or the opportunity to apply at other Kohl's locations, the company said.
"We always take these decisions very seriously," Tom Kingsbury, Kohl’s chief executive officer, said in the release. "As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams."
Macy’s is moving forward with plans announced last February to close 66 stores, including three in Georgia, the iconic department store chain said Thursday.
The majority of the stores are expected to close in the first quarter of 2025, the company said. Over three years in a plan described as Macy’s “Bold New Chapter,” the company plans to close 150 underperforming stores while at the same time investing more heavily in 350 stores that will remain open, according to a news release.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Macy’s chairman and CEO Tony Spring said in the news release.
