Here are three of the most difficult challenges that family caregivers may encounter when looking after their elderly parents or loved ones.

Home Care Services Smyrna, GA

Poor Sleep

As people age, their sleep patterns can be disrupted, causing them to wake up multiple times during the night. This can be due to a shift in their internal body clock, stress, or worry. If dementia is a factor, you may need to be vigilant, as sundowning and wandering could occur. Caring for your parents or a loved one requires a clear and rested mind, which is why getting enough sleep is essential for both your well-being and your ability to provide the best care. After all, you don't want to get so burnt out and tired that you take a trip to the hospital. Avoid getting burnt out and exhausted, as it could lead to a trip to the hospital.

 Elderly Care Smyrna, GA

Lack of Support

Taking care of aging parents can feel overwhelming and like you're shouldering the entire brunt of responsibility. Moreover, thinking that you're the sole caregiver can be stressful and put unneeded strain on other relationships in your life. It's crucial to understand that caregiving is not a one-person task. Trying to handle it alone can lead to burnout, depression, and other serious health issues. It can also negatively impact the quality of care your parents receive.

 Senior Assistance Smyrna, GA

No Privacy

Living with your parents can affect both your physical and emotional privacy, especially if one or both need significant amounts of attention. This can lead to feelings of fear and disorientation when you're not around. Similarly, it can be challenging for your parents to maintain their own privacy while you're taking care of them.

Gun sales up after Trump assassination attempt

The largest gun store in the world, Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna, says its sales are up almost 50 percent since the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

The owner of the largest gun store in the world says his sales have nearly doubled following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

Customers at Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna say they are feeling uneasy following the Pennsylvania rally shooting.

They say they want to be prepared for whatever might happen.

Americans were in disbelief after watching a former president escape an assassination by inches.

U.S. gun sales skyrocket after Trump shooting

Now, FOX 5 Atlanta has learned that many people across the country have flooded gun stores to make purchases, following the weekend violence.

Adventure Outdoors

"Talking to other dealers across the country, business significantly picked up Sunday morning and all day Sunday and even into yesterday too. We've seen a 40 to 50% increase in business nearly overnight," Adventure Outdoors owner Eric Wallace revealed.

Wallace says gun sales were slow this summer, even though it is an election year. His store is closed on Sundays, but at least 12 customers were already standing in line before the doors opened Monday morning.

Mr. Wallace says many Americans have lingering unanswered questions.

"There's some distrust in our government out here where a 20-year-old with no training nearly pulled off an assassination of a former president. That seems unthinkable," Mr. Wallace said.

Thomas Matthew Crooks: What motivated Trump shooting

What may have driven Thomas Matthew Crooks to carry out an apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump? Investigators remained on the hunt for clues behind the 20-year-old suspect's shocking attack, as well as questions over security during the Pennsylvania rally.

Customers say violent events like this should make everyone more responsible, but an 80-year-old grandmother says she was not swayed by the weekend's turn of events.

"I’ve wanted this for a while. [I've] thought about it, taken a class or two, talked to my grandson," customer Harriett Moore said. "Not so much anything like that."

Adventure Outdoors

Adventure Outdoors usually sells about 40 to 45 guns a day.

On Monday, they sold just over 80.

The ‘70s-inspired speakeasy is located at 2860 Atlanta Road in Smyrna Market Village. The 500-square-foot space is decked out in green walls, colorful retro stripes, moody lighting and a ceiling covered in vinyl records.

The cocktail menu features groovy takes on classics such as the Inflation, a punch with raspberries, club soda, rum, lime juice, pineapple juice and sparkling wine; the Suburban Sunbelt, a take on a Bee’s Knees with gin, lemon juice and honey syrup; and the Hemingway daiquiri-inspired Watergate. There’s also the Propaganda specialty cocktail with tequila, Grand Marnier, cranberry juice, lime juice and a sprinkle of Pop Rocks candy. The bar also offers wine and beer. Propaganda does not offer food.

Co-owners Heather Tazza and Mr. Wattson collaborated on the bar’s design. Wattson is a photographer and artist who previously ran chocolate shop and art installation the Chocolate Shop in the Shops of Buckhead. Tazza is a designer with a background in fashion.

They opted to call the bar Propaganda because “that can translate to everything going on today,” Tazza said. “We want to just bring people together, to connect in person, to share your art and feel comfortable.”

To befit the name, they incorporated propaganda posters from the ‘60s and ‘70s into the design, along with collages Tazza created, including one with Polaroids by Andy Warhol and a wallpaper made from scanned cigarette packs. Tazza and Wattson are hoping to use the bar as a space for the “creative community,” she said.

“We went over every detail, we wanted to be like, this is a piece of art, this isn’t just a bar — you’re going in and having this experience,” Tazza said.

The dress code is another eclectic detail; they encourage people to come dressed “fashion forward” or in a ‘60s or ‘70s theme.

“Fashion is also a way to express yourself,” said Tazza, who wants it to be “part of the experience” at Propaganda.

In addition to a DJ spinning vinyl, they have live music on the weekends. Some nights, several musicians play short sets with breaks in between, Tazza said.

Between the bar, several couches and a few tables, Propaganda has seating for about 35 people. Due to the limited capacity, reservations are encouraged.

Propaganda is open 7 p.m.- 1 a.m. Thursdays-Saturdays.

The second time was a charm for Ashley Carlton, who decided to follow in his father's footsteps and create a gourmet cookie shop when he moved to Atlanta.

SMYRNA, Ga. — As people walk into Not As Famous Cookie Company, the smell of baked goods will enchant them as it seeps from the oven, but what most people don’t know is the journey it took a Black business owner to carry out his passion.

The second time was a charm for Ashley Carlton, who followed in his father’s footsteps and created a gourmet cookie shop in Smyrna. The company has been around for eight years.

“I have recipes that have been passed down from a generation. I’ve known about these recipes for close to 40 years now, finally getting out to the masses,” he said.

During Black History Month, Carlton remembers those who came before him while stepping in to help his community.

“Black History Month, to me, is recognizing all the ones that have come before us. Everybody just allowed us to basically live our wildest dreams,” Carlton said.

Following in his father's footsteps

Carlton remembers the first time he made his very first cookie was when he was a child with his father.

The business owner said his father owned a bakery. Unfortunately, his father had to choose between taking care of six kids and owning the shop -- ultimately losing it.

“I saw it as a kid. I wasn’t of age to really help out then. But I knew that, you know, this was a kind of just my guide to entrepreneurship,” he said.

Carlton would then move to Atlanta in 2008 from Indianapolis to carry out his father’s dream and his own passion for baking cookies. A good friend encouraged him to start his business, who he described as his own personal “hype man.”

Soaring through the struggles

According to Carlton’s website, he began his business when he moved to Atlanta, but the mortgage collapse led him back to square one in a brand-new city.

He then went into the corporate scene after his business failed and learned from other small business owners, making him come back even stronger.

“I think the biggest thing is just being your own boss. I saw a lot of things in corporate that were not for me. So for me, being an entrepreneur and living on my own terms,” Carlton said.

He opened his first food truck back in 2015 after his corporate stint and then graduated to a brick-and-mortar shop in Smyrna in 2021.

But when looking for a home for his storefront, he overcame many adversities, including struggles with his landlord. After providing all the documentation, he said it took 15 months to get his business up and running.

He did not let his struggles get in his way as years later, he now mentors the youth, teaching them about the world of business and the importance of Black entrepreneurship.

“I speak a lot to the youth and even my staff to try to help them out by teaching them about entrepreneurship, stuff like that, that actually helps them out,” Carlton said.

He has also worked with several major companies, like Delta and Truist, and even some celebrities. Carlton even met the Black Panther cast, including Chadwick Boseman.

"Warm and gooey" cookies

On to the delicious part of his story, Carlton said the first cookie he ever sold was his Chocolate Chip Cookie - an OG flavor.

“We’re known for that. It’s a sweet yet has a little bit of sea salt on it. People just love it,” he added.

The gourmet cookie maker also said that his business has nine flavors that switch each month — three that stay on the menu and six that rotate.

His favorite cookie is his peanut butter chocolate chip pretzel because of its blend of sweet and salty flavors. Another favorite of Carlton’s is the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup cookie.

Credit: Ashley Carlton

“That one, you know, we glaze it with a peanut butter coat on top. Cups go inside, and it’s a chocolate base,” he said.

For each holiday and special occasion, the company adds a new flavor. This month, his company had a Valentine’s Day sugar and M&M cookie.

And because the company is based in the Peach State, Georgia has its own cookie — a red velvet base with white chocolate chips.

What's next?

Despite starting his business years ago, Carlton claims he's only just getting started.

He is floating around the idea of franchising and possibly opening new stores but is currently going to focus on his storefront and food truck.

Carlton believes young entrepreneurs should be ready to sacrifice to achieve their dreams of starting a business.

“If you really want to be an entrepreneur, spend every hour you’re not at work working on your dream, working on that business,” the business owner added. “If you believe it, fight for what you believe in.”
