An upper-level low pressure system over the Great Basin and Rockies will prompt showers and thunderstorms from the northern Rockies to the Desert Southwest today, with some of the activity possibly becoming strong or briefly severe across Montana and Arizona. However, high pressure shifting eastward over the Great Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley today and on Friday will result in uncomfortably high temperatures. Expect afternoon highs peaking in the 100s and perhaps 110s from Montana to Minnesota.
Southern and central California, Nevada, and western Arizona deserts and valleys will remain above average today before temperatures begin to drop closer to average on Friday. Afternoon high temperatures soaring into the 110s can be expected today.
Heat Advisories and Excessive Heat Warnings remain over extreme western Arizona into southern Nevada through southern and central California. Meanwhile, Heat Advisories and Excessive Heat Warnings remain in effect for over the northern Rockies and northern Plains, including eastern Montana into northern Wyoming, western and central Dakotas. Along with these threats, fire danger remains high across much of the northern Rockies and High Plains. Fire alerts are found from the north-central Plains to the Pacific Northwest due to an increase in winds amid dry conditions.

Montana witnessed a few record high temperatures broken on Wednesday. Cut Bank. Mont., saw temperatures rise to 100 degrees which broke the previous record of 99 degrees that was set last year. Great Falls, Mont., saw temperatures rise to 103 degrees which broke the previous record of 102 degrees set in 1929. Helena, Mont., saw temperatures rise to 102 degrees on Wednesday which broke the previous record of 100 degrees that was also set in 1929. But the winner of the day was Havre, Mont., as temperatures soared to 107 degrees Wednesday afternoon, shattering the previous record of 104 degrees that was set last year.
If outdoor activities or work cannot be avoided, make sure to dry plenty of fluids to stay well-hydrated or take frequent breaks indoors in air conditioning. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Also – make sure to check on those most vulnerable to hot weather, including young children, elderly, and pets. Never leave kids or pets unattended and remember to “Look Before You Lock!” Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
