Start with the policy itself
Long-term care insurance policies are individual contracts, so the details matter. Locate the full policy, recent statements, and insurer contact information. Ask the carrier what steps are required before services begin, what records they need, and who can answer questions about the policy in writing.
Understand the care plan separately
First decide what support would be helpful for your loved one’s daily life, then discuss the policy with the insurer. A care provider may explain its services and invoices, but only the insurer can explain how it will apply a specific policy.
Give yourself room to review
Coverage questions can feel urgent when a family is already under pressure. If possible, invite another family member or trusted adviser into the review process. A short list of questions and written follow-up can make the next decision more manageable.
